[Voiceover] It's one of the most important seaports in Europe, handling millions of tons of cargo and welcoming millions of cruise ship passengers each year. Now, the Port of Barcelona is getting another upgrade - a brand new electric vehicle shipping and logistics terminal. Set to be operational by 2027, it will strengthen Barcelona's status as an automotive hub. [Standup] Ken Browne, Reporter: "The expansion here at the Príncep d'Espanya dock is worth around 75 million U.S. dollars and is strategically placed, connecting maritime, rail and road routes, giving Chinese carmakers a direct line to southern and central Europe." [Voiceover] Fully automated, fully electrified, the silo will have capacity for close to 10-thousand vehicles and will be topped by solar panels generating its own energy on site, part of carbon-neutral goals. Forecasts are that it will move some 180-thousand cars per year by 2028, many of them from Chinese EV companies. But while sustainability and automation are key, Barcelona will also benefit in other ways. [Standup] Jordi Ortiz, Director, Foreign Direct Investment, ACCIO, Catalonia Trade and Investment: "We believe that it's not just the place like just to land and delivery, but it can create a whole ecosystem around it. We want to position ourselves as a region to develop this industry. We believe there's a lot of opportunities, not just about the distribution, but also about maintenance, services, other industries that we can create around the port and everything. So, yeah, for us, it's a great opportunity." [Voiceover] In 2023, the Port of Barcelona imported close to 800-thousand cars and soon expects to receive many more thanks to this new state-of the-art terminal, helping accelerate Spain and Europe's green transition.
