AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — Both directions of Interstate 20 have reopened at mile marker 13 in Aiken County, just 36 hours after a tanker crash and fire severely damaged a bridge, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Following the incident, SCDOT and emergency response teams worked around the clock to demolish the damaged bridge, clear debris, and repave the impacted roadway. Crews also replaced guardrails to ensure the safety of the route.

SCDOT thanked its partners, including the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, GVW Fire Department, United Infrastructure Group, Satterfield Construction Company, and the public for their support and patience during the rapid recovery effort.

The reopening restores a critical transportation link between Augusta and Columbia.
