INDIO, Calif. — A quick-thinking police officer is being praised for his heroic actions after rescuing an 18-year-old male from a canal near Golf Center Parkway and Avenue 42 on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Indio Police Department, Officer Cardenas arrived around 12:32 p.m. and immediately spotted the teen submerged and unresponsive. Without hesitation, he entered the water, pulled the victim to the surface, and began CPR. The teen regained consciousness and became alert within moments.

Officers used a rescue disc and fixed ladder to guide both the officer and the teen to safety. CalFire crews later rescued the teen’s dog, which had prompted the initial fall into the water. The dog was unharmed.

The teen was transported to JFK Hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Authorities are reminding the public to stay clear of canal edges and keep pets leashed, citing the steep walls, swift currents, and cold water that make canals extremely dangerous.
