On the morning of June 16 at approximately 8:23 AM, a powerful explosion occurred at the Shanzhou Fireworks Factory in Linli County, Changde City, Hunan Province, China. The blast happened during a mechanical loading process, suddenly engulfing the site in flames and thick smoke. The explosion's shockwave severely damaged surrounding facilities—blowing out windows of nearby homes.

Authorities report that 2 individuals are currently missing, and 9 others were injured, though none of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The factory, operated by Hunan Shanzhou Fireworks Co., Ltd., has a troubling safety record. Since its establishment in 2017, it has been fined and penalised multiple times for safety violations, unauthorised changes to workshop use, and illegal land use. This incident highlights longstanding safety management issues within the company.
