Cambodia blocks Thai agricultural imports amid border conflict
Cambodia continued to block Thai agricultural imports amid rising border tensions.
Around 30 trucks carrying fruits, vegetables, and seafood were left stranded in eastern Thailand after being blocked by soldiers at a border checkpoint in Trat today.
Footage shows several vehicles clogging up the Ban Hat Lek border crossing. At 8 am, troops allowed only the seafood-loaded trucks.
Truck driver Chatree Em-od said he drove through the crossing every other day and Cambodia had never prohibited him from transporting seafood.
Fruit truck driver Siwanart Prachanthasri said: ‘I was hired to deliver fruit from Talad Thai market in Pathum Thani to vendors in Koh Kong, Cambodia. My employer knew about the bans but told me to take the cargo to the border crossing and wait.
‘If the ban continues, I will simply drive back to Talad Thai when told to do so.'
Cambodian former Prime Minister Hun Sen implemented the agricultural embargo as he warned Thailand to lift all border restrictions.
He said on Monday: 'If the Thai side does not open border crossings to normalcy today, tomorrow, we will implement throughout the border a ban on the imports of fruit and vegetables to Cambodia.'
Thai premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra shrugged off the threat and said Thailand would not be cowed by warnings from 'unofficial' channels.
She said: 'Messages via unofficial channels do not bring good results for both countries.'
Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have intensified following a deadly clash between their troops in a disputed area of Ubon Ratchathani, on May 28.
The skirmish killed a Cambodian sergeant. Thailand said it was committed to resolving the dispute conflict through bilateral means, while Cambodia has vowed to bring the case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Cambodia has responded by closing a border checkpoint, disrupting fruit and vegetable transport from Thailand.
Thailand and Cambodia have a fractious history. The Khmer Empire once stretched across much of Southeast Asia before the ancient leaders moved their base south to Phnom Penh in the 16th century amid water shortages.
Thai tribes used it as a chance to encroach and claim much of the deserted land, including priceless sandstone temples and artefacts.
In the 1970s, Thailand supported the Khmer Rouge while they carried out one of the world's worst ever genocides. The country then provided sanctuary for the group's murderous leaders, even allegedly stealing aid funds that were intended to rebuild Cambodia.
