Eerie footage shows a cemetery filled with the graves of hundreds of babies who were removed from pregnant women after they died.

Volunteer rescuer Sanom Phiwbang, 81, has served as the undertaker at the site for more than 40 years in Ang Thong province, Thailand.

He has decorated it with toys, children's clothes, and shrines - gifts that locals believe are offerings to the spirits of the unborn infants.

Locals even bring their own gifts, including dolls, toy cars, snacks, and models of child deities to honour and remember the unborn babies.

Behind the memorial area, rows of wooden grave markers are visible, many adorned with colourful flower garlands.

Sanom said that when a pregnant woman dies, he carefully removes the stillborn baby from her womb and buries it in the cemetery. The mother is then cremated according to religious customs.

Over the decades, Sanom has buried more than 100 stillborn babies - a solemn duty he carries out with deep respect.

He said: 'This is a belief that has existed since ancient times.

'Stillborn babies are given their own burial so their spirits may rest, while their mothers are cremated following Buddhist rites.

'I take the duty very seriously. It's deeply significant that the unborn children are remembered.'

The process of removing an unborn baby from the deceased pregnant mother is known as a perimortem cesarean section, if it is performed in an effort to save the child.

However, the kind of procedure that Sanom performs is post-mortem cesarean section, which is carried out after the mother has died.

A coffin birth is a rare phenomenon when the mother has already died, but her body naturally expels the fetus. Medically, it is called a post-mortem fetal extrusion.
