Los Angeles, United States - June 17, 2025 06/17/2025 01:59 am GMT-0700 VERNON, Calif. – The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched to a hazmat incident near the intersection of Downey Road and Bandini Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find a rail car leaking hot tar oil. It remains unclear what caused the leak, but crews estimate that approximately 5,000 gallons of hot tar oil spilled from the rail car onto the tracks and Bandini Street. One male, approximately 50 years old, suffered a burn injury to his hand during the incident and was transported to an area hospital by paramedics. Firefighters used absorbent materials to contain the leak, and it did not appear that any tar reached the storm drains. LACoFD Hazmat crews were on the scene, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was requested for assistance. Meanwhile, Vernon police officers halted all traffic on Bandini while crews worked to manage the spill.
