Mount Lewotobi Laki‑laki erupted on Tuesday (June 17), sending a towering ash plume up to 11 km into the sky, which grounded dozens of flights to and from Bali.

Located in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, the volcano is one half of a twin peak known locally as "Laki-laki" (male) and "Perempuan" (female)."

Local resident Arnoldus Edwin Mau of Larantuka filmed the dramatic ash cloud rising over the island.

Authorities raised the alert level to its highest and set up a 7km exclusion zone, evacuating several villages.

The disruption to air traffic affected at least 32 flights from airlines including Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Air India, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and Qantas.

Authorities continue to warn locals and tourists as volcanic activity remains elevated.
