VARIOUS OF WORKERS PRODUCING INCENSE STICKS HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM - JUNE 19, 2025: Workers in a mini factory in Binh Chanh, a village in Ho Chi Minh City, continue to produce incense sticks using agarbatti-making machines. Vietnamese incense sticks are primarily made from bamboo and aromatic powders such as agarwood, cinnamon and herbs, giving them their distinctive fragrance. Locals burn incense during major events, including Lunar New Year celebrations, to pray for health, safety and spiritual connection. In addition to meeting domestic demand, Vietnam exports large quantities of incense to countries such as Malaysia, India, China and the United States. With an annual export value of nearly $23 million, the country ranks as the world’s fourth-largest incense exporter. Production at small-scale factories like those in Binh Chanh plays a key role in preserving cultural practices while contributing to Vietnam’s position in the global incense market.
