A family boating trip on the Manatee River turned into a jaw-dropping experience Sunday when twin waterspouts suddenly formed just offshore.

Jeni Scheid, 41, captured the rare moment on camera. She was on the boat with her husband, D.J., a friend, and other family members when the sky darkened and rain began to pour.

As they turned back toward shore, D.J. spotted something unusual—water rising about 200 feet from their boat.

“That’s going to be a waterspout,” he said.

Seconds later, two swirling funnels spiraled down from the clouds. The group watched in stunned silence as the twin waterspouts twisted in tandem over the river.

“It looked like something from a movie,” Jeni said.

The spouts moved slowly and remained over water. Unlike tornadoes, they kicked up no debris, allowing the group to watch safely from a distance.

Back on land, Jeni discovered that others had seen the massive funnels from miles away.

The same storm system also produced a single waterspout earlier in Tampa Bay.

No injuries or landfall were reported.

The National Weather Service urges boaters to stay clear of waterspouts, warning that they can be just as dangerous as tornadoes.
