El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, Sudan, is in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with over one million civilians trapped under siege for more than a year, facing severe shortages of food, water and medical supplies. The armed conflict in Sudan, which erupted in mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rival Rapid Support Forces, has now raged for over two years, with the western region of Darfur remaining one of the most severely affected areas. Sustained fighting has inflicted extensive damage on hospitals, schools, markets, and residential areas, resulting in heavy civilian casualties. Most medical facilities in El Fasher have been forced to shut down due to a critical lack of supplies, leaving countless wounded and sick people without treatment. "Schools, reception centers and other public places and civilian facilities are indiscriminately shelled. The fighting has also caused the destruction of almost all medical institutions," said Babiker Hamdeen, Minister of Health and Social Development of the Darfur Region. The blockade of key supply routes has led to severe food shortages and rising prices. According to UN estimates, around 1.65 million people -- including approximately 825,000 children -- are trapped in El Fasher and surrounding displacement camps. Many have resorted to eating leaves and peanut shells to survive. "We've lost all our belongings. We have no food or water. My children have been suffering from diarrhea and vomiting. They are hungry and sick, but they have no treatment. This has been going on for eight days. We can't find any medicine for them," said Shafa Saleh, a displaced person. On June 2, a UN aid convoy attempting to deliver supplies was attacked 80 kilometers from El Fasher, killing five humanitarian workers. It was the first UN relief mission to try entering the besieged city in over a year. The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire and safe access for aid organizations, warning that without urgent intervention, the humanitarian catastrophe in El Fasher and surrounding areas will worsen, putting hundreds of thousands at risk.
