Stranded animals rescued from Hurricane Erick carnage in Mexico
Stranded animals were rescued from the devastation left by Hurricane Erick in Mexico as emergency teams rushed to support communities impacted by the storm.
Humane World for Animals has mobilised to assist areas severely affected by the powerful Category 3 storm, which struck Oaxaca on June 19, triggering widespread flooding and power outages.
The organisation deployed a disaster response team to multiple locations, including Puerto Escondido, La Raya, Jicaltepec, and Agua de la Cana.
More than 1,000 animals, including dogs, cats, chickens, and farmed animals, have received emergency veterinary care, food, and vital supplies.
In Puerto Escondido, the team responded to an urgent call from a local dog shelter housing 74 animals, many of which were suffering from skin and other health conditions.
Felipe Marquez, the organisation's Latin America Disaster Response Manager, is leading the mission.
Marquez said: 'We are reaching more remote communities badly impacted by Hurricane Erick. People are deeply concerned about their animals. Our support gives them one less thing to worry about.'
He added that pets are not only companions but also vital sources of emotional strength during disasters.
Humane World for Animals is working in partnership with the National System for Integral Family Development in Oaxaca, the Oaxaca State Veterinary Association, and Universidad de la Costa.
The team remains on the ground and committed as relief operations continue.
