Rescue teams sift through tissue factory fire wreckage in Thailand
Rescue teams sifted through the wreckage of a burnt tissue factory as they searched for missing workers in Thailand.
Footage shows firefighters digging piles of charred tissue paper at the River Pulp and Paper Co., plant in Saraburi today.
A raging blaze had broken out in the three-storey warehouse where some 100 employees were working on June 30.
More than 50 firefighters and water tankers had been scrambled to the scene, where 10 workers were believed to have been trapped in the upper floors.
Authorities said the inferno quickly grew as it ate through stocks of flammable material in the building. Ten people have been confirmed dead today, July 1, though two of them were still missing in the carnage.
Fire crews fought for hours to bring the blaze under control as the factory's upper floors collapsed, hampering rescue efforts.
One female employee was reported to have leapt off the third floor in a desperate attempt to escape. She survived but suffered serious leg injuries.
Fire and Rescue Thailand said the fire was under control by 9:35 pm local time.
Firefighters said 26 people were injured, including four in critical condition. A makeshift triage centre was set up near the factory to treat the wounded before they were rushed to local hospitals.
Operations were shut down as a probe was launched into the cause of the fire. Officials believe it may have started in a storage and conveyor area of the factory.
The factory owners have vowed to compensate the families of the injured and deceased workers.
