Liverpool Flag Lowered To Half Mast After Death Of Diogo Jota In Fiery Crash
On July 3rd, a video posted by the X account The Way I See Liverpool showed the Liverpool FC flag being raised to half mast, following the tragic death of Diogo Jota.
The 28-year-old footballer was killed in a car crash in northern Spain, along with his 26-year-old brother Andre, also a professional player.
The accident happened early Thursday on the A-52 near Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. A tyre on the Lamborghini reportedly burst while overtaking, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, overturn, and catch fire. The blaze spread to nearby vegetation. Emergency services responded quickly but were unable to save the brothers. It is not yet known who was driving.
Liverpool FC described the tragedy as “unimaginable” and said the club was “devastated” by the loss. People have begun laying flowers and tributes outside Anfield.
Jota had married his childhood partner, Rute Cardoso, just two weeks before the crash. They had been together since the age of 16 and shared three children. In his final Instagram post, shared just hours before the accident, Jota posted wedding footage and wrote that he felt like “the luckiest man in the world.”
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the deaths on Thursday morning.
