On July 2nd, Mount Shinmoedake erupted again, sending ash high into the sky, according to a video shared by X user @517doa at 12:02.

“Mount Shinmoedake has erupted again,” the user wrote alongside the footage.

Volcanologists in Japan are closely observing the southwestern volcano amid concerns that a magma eruption could follow.

Located on the border of Kagoshima and Miyazaki, Mount Shinmoedake first erupted on June 22, marking its first activity since 2018. Activity has continued since then.

On Wednesday, an ash plume rose 2,800 meters above the crater. Volcanology officials reported significant gas emissions and crustal movement consistent with underground swelling.

Tests on the ash showed no new magma, and the experts did not declare an emergency meeting.

Shimizu Hiroshi, head of the expert committee and director of the Center for Volcanic Research Promotion at NIED, said the current eruption is not magmatic but warned that the risk remains.

He emphasized the importance of continued monitoring to assess underground changes.

The alert level remains at 3 out of 5. Japan’s Meteorological Agency has warned of falling rocks and potential pyroclastic flows within 3 kilometers of the volcano.
