GAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 2, 2025: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are devising alternative solutions to meet essential needs, including producing fuel from plastic waste to cope with the worsening fuel shortage amid the ongoing Israeli blockade. By burning plastic waste and tires, then subjecting the material to processes such as distillation, condensation, and refining to extract crude fuel, Palestinians independently produce much-needed resources to power their vehicles and, especially, generators in hospitals. While the locally produced fuel plays a vital role in helping Palestinians sustain daily life under dire conditions, it poses serious health risks to those near the fabrication area due to toxic emissions and the unregulated production process. The fuel produced in a workshop employing 30 people is the region’s only source for meeting its people's fuel needs amid the Israeli blockade. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
