Record-breaking rain brings Chinese city's transport infrastructure to a standstill
Starting at 3 p.m. on July 3, Chengdu, Sichuan, was hit by a historically rare rainstorm. The meteorological observatory issued a red alert, with over 100 mm of rainfall falling in just three hours in the main urban area. At Qingyang People’s Park Station, rainfall reached 323.7mm, setting a new historical record for a single station in the city centre.
The rain was both intense and concentrated, with a peak hourly rainfall of 102.2mm—breaking previous records. The severity far exceeded the design capacity of Chengdu’s urban drainage system, leading to widespread urban flooding.
At Chengdu East Railway Station, the sudden downpour overwhelmed drainage pipes on the waiting hall roof, causing rainwater to overflow into some waiting areas and creating a "water curtain" effect.
Flooding from outside also caused water to backflow into the arrival level, with water reaching ankle- to calf-height. Passengers had to step on sandbags or wade through the water to move around.
The heavy rain caused delays of over 30 minutes for several trains, though services were not fully suspended. Emergency dispatch protocols were activated at the station.
Railway authorities stated that affected passengers can apply for a full refund within five days of the ticket date via the 12306 platform or station ticket windows.
