China: China's first Mars-themed base offers simulated outer space tourism
Storyline: China's first Mars-themed base offers simulated outer space tourism [Voice_over] A simulated Martian habitat in northwest China's Gansu Province is attracting hordes of tourists this summer with promises of other worldly experiences. "Mars Base 1" covers an area of 67 square kilometers and is nestled in the Gobi desert where the rocky terrain resembles what we humans think the surface of Mars is like. The base features Mars probes, Mars rovers, starry sky tents and 3D-printed Mars nests. Meanwhile, guests can witness simulated rocket launches, experience manual rendezvous and docking, and observe how hydroponic plants grow in a simulated Martian environment. [Sound_bite] Zhang Chengxu, Visitor: "I saw a video about the landscapes here simulating Mars, when I was amazed. Now I'm here to find red sandstone, Mars rover and nests printed with 3D technology. It really felt like I had traveled to the outer space." [Sound_bite] An Xin, Visitor: "Such training equipment like three-dimensional rolling rings and centrifuges, though simplified versions, still offer an intuitive experience that cannot be felt in books or videos, which is very interesting." [Voice_over] The base first opened to the public in April 2019. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
