This is the shocking moment the New York subway was swamped by a heavy downpour.

Footage captured by Juan Luis Landaeta shows floodwaters gushing through a Manhattan station on Monday, July 14, following torrential rain that battered the region.

Juan said: 'This is at the 28rd Street station on the 1 train right now. Thank you all for your concern. I am fine, and everyone on the subway was fine. I have arrived home safely.'

Heavy rain swept through the region on Monday, triggering flooding in parts of New Jersey and New York's northern suburbs.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in response to the severe weather.

Commuters were advised to delay travel while train services between Manhattan and the Bronx were suspended.
