The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued eight fishermen stranded for two days at sea after their vessel broke down.

The PCG responded to a distress call from the crew stuck floating 70 nautical miles west of Botolan in Zambales, at around 12 noon on Sunday.

The vessel called F/B Grey Erron reportedly suffered a clutch disk transmission failure leaving it 'dead in the water', officials said.

Rescue crews reached the scene at 6 am the next day and provided drinking water and medical supplies to the fishermen.

Footage shows a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat arriving to hand over aid to the stranded villagers as the PCG's flagship vessel, the BRP Teresa Magbanua, sailed some distance away.

One of the fishermen was found to be in urgent need of medical care, suffering from severe leg swelling caused by arthritis.

PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said in a statement: 'Necessary medications were administered, and the patient was safely evacuated along with two other crew members for further medical evaluation.'

Engineers confirmed the fishing vessel's engine was 'inoperable', but made efforts to recharge its main engine battery.

A support boat arrived on Tuesday morning, July 15, to collect the remaining crew and return them to safety.

In a statement, the PCG said: 'The crew of F/B GREY ERRON expressed immense gratitude for the assistance provided, highlighting the importance of the PCG's role in ensuring the safety and welfare of those at sea.'
