Vienna, Austria - July 17, 2025 For the first time, golden takins can now be seen at Schönbrunn Zoo, following the safe arrival of two male animals in the new Asian mountain habitat. After a short adjustment period behind the scenes, the golden takins were socialized and introduced to the resident Himalayan takins. All animals are now exploring the newly constructed enclosure together. "With their powerful build, golden fur, and surefootedness, the golden takins immediately impress," said Zoo Director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck. Native to the mountain forests of China’s Shaanxi province, golden takins are classified as endangered and are rarely kept in zoos. "We are therefore delighted to now be able to introduce our visitors to this new and special species," he added. The 1,400-square-meter mountain enclosure was completed in 2024. With massive rocks, artificial cliffs, and a 12-meter elevation change, it mimics the animals’ native habitat. Built on the former site of the Barbary Sheep and Tahr enclosures, the new design includes a trench that gives visitors clear views of both species climbing. The Himalayan Tahrs have been especially active recently, with several new births. "Keeping golden and Himalayan Tahrs together offers an exciting experience," said curator Rupert Kainradl, MSc. "While the Tahrs skillfully climb the steep cliffs, the more sedate Takins primarily stay in the areas between them."
