Driver arrested after double decker roof torn off in canal aqueduct crash
Video shows the shocking aftermath after the roof of a double decker bus was ripped off when it crashed into a canal aqueduct in Eccles, Greater Manchester.
The number 100 bus was off of its usual route when it smashed in to the aqueduct on Barton Lane at about 3pm yesterday.
A total of 17 people were treated at the scene for injuries, with a further three seriously injured and taken to hospital.
The driver of the bus, a man in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and has since been bailed.
The aqueduct has a height restriction of 3.5 metres, or 11 feet and six inches. In April 2023, another bus crashed at the same spot, with its roof also ripped off.
Hanging chains and signage warn drivers of the height restriction.
Police are now investigating and asking for witnesses to come forward. A 19-year-old woman, a man in his 20s, and a man in his 40s are in hospital in a stable condition.
Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with everyone on board the bus. Our absolute focus has been on supporting emergency services in their response, with some people treated at the scene and some taken to hospital."
"An immediate and urgent investigation into the circumstances is underway and we are working closely with the investigation team at Greater Manchester Police and the bus operator, Stagecoach."
"This is clearly a distressing situation for everyone involved and we'd like to thank emergency services for their swift response."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log number 2226 of 21/07/2025.
