Gaza journalists launch hunger strike to expose Israel’s weaponization of hunger
SHOTLIST: - GAZA, PALESTINE (JULY 23, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. PALESTINIAN JOURNALIST VEDI ABU SUUD RECORDING REPORT 2. INTERVIEW WITH PALESTINIAN JOURNALIST VEDI ABU SUUD 3. PALESTINIAN JOURNALIST VEDI ABU SUUD DRINKING ONLY SALTED WATERGAZA, PALESTINE - JULY 23: Confronted daily with images of dying children and the smell of starvation, a group of journalists in northern Gaza has launched an open-ended hunger strike to draw global attention to what they call Israel’s deliberate use of hunger as a weapon. The hunger strike comes as Gaza’s Health Ministry reports a sharp rise in deaths linked to starvation and malnutrition under Israel’s months-long blockade and relentless bombardment. Once counting one or two hunger deaths daily, the ministry now says at least 10 people die each day from lack of food. Since October 7, the ministry reports, 111 people have died from hunger or related complications. On July 19, Vedi Abu Suud, a reporter for Yemen TV, and two colleagues began what they call the “Empty Stomachs Movement,” pledging to continue until at least the youngest child in Gaza can eat. For four days now, they have survived on nothing but salted water. Abu Suud said he reached a breaking point after witnessing an elderly woman collapse and die of hunger before his eyes. “We see children, the elderly, and pregnant women dying every day,” Abu Suud said, adding that: “It’s a humanitarian nightmare beyond even the worst of nightmares. After seeing that woman die, I felt I had to act and try to reach the free consciences of the world.” Abu Suud, who has remained in northern Gaza since the start of the war, insists he is speaking not only as a journalist, but first and foremost as a human being. “Maybe I can move someone, somewhere,” he said. However, he said that at times it felt as if he were speaking to a wall. Yet still, Abu Suud vows to continue his hunger strike: “I can not keep eating while they die.” Israeli forces have killed more than 59,100 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, collapsed the health system, and led to severe food shortages. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
