Azerbaijani tourist 'posing as Interpol officer arrested for robbery' in Bali
An Azerbaijani tourist was arrested for allegedly posing as an Interpol officer before robbing a money changer in Bali.
The suspect, identified by authorities only as TFO, 35, reportedly attacked two employees who were delivering cash to the Aura Segara Villa in Badung on Sunday, July 27.
He was arrested after being lynched by furious residents who saw the terrified workers flee the scene.
Footage shows TFO pleading with locals as some of them picked up the scattered banknotes on the street.
Police officers on patrol soon arrived to detain the holidaymaker. Officials said the man called a money changer to swap 12,000 USD to the local currency.
The two employees delivered 191 million IDR to the lodging, but were reportedly attacked by the tourist and a second suspect posing as an Interpol agent while they were counting the money.
Assistant Commissioner Ketut Sukadi, Head of Public Relations for the Denpasar Police, said: 'The perpetrator strangled and held the victims in a chokehold before fleeing with the money.
'As he was about to flee, one of the money-changer employees rammed his motorcycle, causing it to fall onto the street. A commotion ensued, and hundreds of millions of rupiah were scattered across the street.
'Some angry residents even beat the perpetrator. At the same time, police officers were on patrol. One of the perpetrators, an Azerbaijani citizen, was apprehended.'
The officer added that the suspect allegedly admitted the motive for the robbery was to fund their stay on the holiday island.
Police said they were hunting TFO's suspected accomplice, named only as 'Johny'. They have not disclosed his nationality.
