A German fugitive wanted by Interpol was arrested over noise and traffic complaints on the Thai 'Full Moon Party' island.

Sukru Yusuf Onganer, 22, allegedly fled to the tropical nation to escape criminal charges in his home country.

But instead of keeping a low profile, the tourist sparked outrage when he tore through the streets of the bustling island of Koh Phangan.

Furious locals reported that he had been roaring his engine and riding recklessly, causing a public disturbance in the community on November 9.

Police tracked down the holidaymaker after receiving a report at 12:30 pm local time.

Footage show Sukru violating traffic rules as he drove along the road without a helmet or a license plate.

He then stopped at a local carwash, where officers detained him. They searched his grey Yamaha T-Max motorcycle and seized a brass knuckle knife from the storage compartment.

During interrogations, Sukru said: 'I know a lot of people here, I've been living here for six months now. My girlfriend is also local. I know her family, her family knows me. Everybody that I try to have contact on this island, they know me.

'And I don't want to ride crazy or something, but it's not like that. But if you see me drive like this, my bike is low. Some people think I drive crazy, but really, I am careful, I have a girlfriend.'

He later appeared to threaten the officers, telling them he has 'really good friends, police in Bangkok, big boss' before refusing to talk.

Police checked his criminal background and discovered that he was wanted in Germany for extortion and robbery causing bodily harm.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Vinij Boonchit of the island's Tourist Police said: 'We charged him with riding recklessly without regard for safety and possessing a weapon.

‘We handed him and the seized items to the Koh Phangan station for prosecution.

‘We will also coordinate with the German law enforcement agency to request information for further action.'

Suriya Boonphan, Koh Phangan district chief, said Sukru was found to be 'aggressive and disrespectful' to the police, adding that law-breaking tourists on the island will be prosecuted.

Authorities said they were preparing to deport Sukru to Germany.

The Thai Full Moon Party is an all-night beach party on the island of Koh Phangan. The party takes place on the night of every full moon and is usually attended by thousands of backpackers.

However, the event has become a notorious celebration filled with cheap drink and drugs. With cannabis now legal on the island, magic mushrooms, kratom, methamphetamine and LSD are also widely available.
