(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SALIM ASFOUR, 75-YEAR-OLD PALESTINIAN MAN, SPEAKING TO REPORTER, SAYING: "I was displaced from Abasan to the area known as Shaarah. I’ve been displaced there for five months. The situation started worsening — there was more hardship, more need, no ability, no resources." "Then the hunger started, the pain began, the illness began, and it all escalated to this horrific tragedy." "Sometimes the person (like me) becomes unable to get up, can’t see properly, can’t do anything — only trying to survive for the sake of the children and the family. You try to carry on just for them." [...] "I may be able to endure, but the child can’t. The child can’t bear this." 4. VARIOUS OF SALIM ASFOUR AND HIS FAMILY IN MAKESHIFT TENT 5. SALIM ASFOUR COUGHING IN PAIN, FAMILY MEMBERS AROUND HIM KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - AUG. 4, 2025: Seventy-five-year-old Salim Asfour is struggling to survive under Israel’s ongoing blockade and military assault on the Gaza Strip, deprived of basic necessities and battling severe hunger and declining health. Once weighing 75 kilograms, Asfour now weighs less than 40. Emaciated and visibly malnourished, he can no longer stand or sit without help. He suffers from extreme weakness, partial vision loss, and limited mobility. Speaking from his home, Asfour described how hunger and lack of access to essential supplies have taken a serious toll on his health. “Sometimes I become unable to get up, can’t see properly, can’t do anything — only trying to survive for the sake of the children and the family,” he said. Asfour stressed that while he might manage to endure the suffering, children are unable to withstand Israel’s starvation policy. The poor man is among hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza who face similar conditions under Israeli blockade and genocidal attacks. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus renewed calls for the facilitation of a sustained, uninterrupted, and expanded flow of humanitarian health aid into the besieged enclave. “We urge for the continued facilitation of a sustained, uninterrupted and scaled-up flow of health aid. Lives across Gaza depend on it,” he said. Israel has continued to impose a systematic starvation policy on approximately 2.4 million Palestinians in Gaza by sealing off all crossings to aid shipments, which have been stranded at the border since March 2. The blockade has pushed the enclave into famine. The Gaza Health Ministry said on Sunday the number of Palestinians who have died from starvation caused by the Israeli blockade has reached 175, including 93 children, since Israel’s genocide began in October 2023. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 60,800 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
