China: Cool-season vegetables from China grow customer base globally
[Voiceover] In China's Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, cool season veggies like broccoli and bok choy are being harvested and shipped to locations around the world. At this vegetable growing base, workers are preparing an order for Malaysia and Singapore. In just over 40 hours, the refrigerated truck carrying approximately 30 tons of veggies will arrive in Shenzhen, where it will be shipped by sea to the Southeast Asian nations. [Soundbite] Ding Ling, head, vegetable company: "May to October is the peak export period, with approximately 10 truckloads shipped daily. Our exports in the first half of this year totaled 15 million U.S. dollars, a 122% increase compared to last year." [Voiceover] Advanced and comprehensive cold chain logistics have also been accelerating cool-season vegetable exports, like shipping them via passenger flights. Once a week, there’s a Sichuan Airlines flight that departs from Yinchuan, the regional capital, and arrives in Dubai, in the UAE eight hours later. That flight has been instrumental in getting fresh produce to supermarket shelves in as little as 48 hours after being harvested. [Soundbite] Ma Tianjin, head, e-commerce company: "We export cucumbers and eggplants, more than 20 varieties in total. In the second half of the year, we’ll gradually expand our vegetable range, and order volumes are expected to double." [Voiceover] According to customs officials, Ningxia exported more than 33,000 tons of cool-season vegetables in the first half of 2025, a year-on-year increase of almost 77 percent.
