A surprising video from Colorado Parks and Wildlife Southwest Region shows a bear opening a home door near Telluride and casually walking inside.

The security footage captures the bear standing on its hind legs, pressing the door handle with its paw, then entering the house without hesitation.

Wildlife officials warn that bears gaining the ability to open doors poses serious risks to both people and animals.

“Our officers have responded to many incidents of bears entering homes around Telluride and Mountain Village this summer,” the statement said. “There have been cases of multiple bears entering the same home in one night and bears breaking into several homes on the same night.”

Residents who experience bear break-ins are encouraged to report them right away.

“Too often, we hear about bears entering homes days after the first break-in. The sooner you contact CPW, the better the outcome can be for both you and the bear,” officials emphasized.
