China: Cycling climbs up as hot summer activity in China
[Voiceover] In Beijing, cycling is moving into the fast lane, as a popular social activity and sport. One cycling route from the city's Tangu Commercial District to the Jietai Temple has become super popular with some 4,000 riders per day. The 8-kilometer route is mainly mountainous, with winding roads. Completing one-way of the journey in under an hour is something to celebrate. [Soundbite] Cycling enthusiast: "We often organize group cycling activities. Riding with a group of around 15 to 20 people makes the experience more fun and social." [Soundbite] Cycling enthusiast: "Lately, I've been cycling about 400 kilometers a week. Over the past two months, I've lost 20 kilograms." [Voiceover] Besides trail bikes, urban bicycles, and cycling gear are in high demand due to the increase in cycling enthusiasts. The head of one bike shop said their sales have soared by 20 to 30 percent since springtime. The owner of a bike apparel shop, meanwhile, has had a similar experience this year. [Soundbite] He Xin, head, cycling culture space: "Since the weather warmed up in April and May, sales across stores have increased by about 20 percent to 30 percent. The most popular bikes are priced between around 1,400 and 7,000 U.S. dollars. Bike maintenance is also crucial. Cyclists typically service their bikes once or twice a year, with costs ranging from 110 to 140 U.S. dollars per session." [Soundbite] Chi Quanlong, store manager, cycling apparel shop: "Cycling jerseys, pants, helmets, glasses, sun-protective face covers, and cycling caps—sales over the past three months have grown by about 30 percent to 40 percent compared to last year." [Voiceover] To accommodate the increase in cyclists, many districts in the city are adding amenities like bike-friendly restaurants and dedicated bike parking areas.
