ZARQA, JORDAN / GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (AUGUST 9, 2025) (AUGUST 9, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT “ITALIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENSE” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Italy launched a humanitarian aid operation on Saturday, Aug. 9, airdropping essential supplies into the Gaza Strip to assist civilians affected by the ongoing conflict and severe shortages of basic necessities.

The Italian Defense Ministry announced the first airdrop as part of "Solidarity Path Operation 2," a mission aimed at delivering aid to isolated and hard-to-reach areas in Gaza. The operation was carried out by Italian military aircraft in coordination with the Jordanian Royal Air Force, the Italian Army, and the Italian Air Force.

In a statement, the ministry said the missions would continue in the coming days until all aid—provided by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other donors—is fully distributed.

The Italian Defense Ministry emphasized its commitment to alleviating civilian suffering, stating: "Italy is always ready and willing to bring hope and aid to those in greatest need. Our goal is to intervene swiftly to address the emergency while supporting diplomatic efforts for a lasting ceasefire—an essential condition for peace based on the principle of two peoples, two states."

The airdrops come as Gaza faces a deepening humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies due to prolonged hostilities and an Israeli blockade. Israel has maintained restrictions on Gaza for 18 years and has shut down all crossings since March 2, further exacerbating conditions in the enclave.

Since October 2023, more than 60,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli military operations, according to Palestinian authorities.

Italy's operation underscores the role of military forces in humanitarian missions, with the Defense Ministry stating: "This, too, is the mission of Defense: to protect, heal, and rebuild, placing its capabilities at the service of Italy and the international community."

At least 61,369 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry also noted that 21 Palestinians were killed and over 341 injured while trying to get humanitarian aid in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 1,743, with over 12,590 others wounded since May 27.

The ministry reported that 11 people, including children, have died in the past 24 hours due to famine and malnutrition. This brings the total death toll from starvation to 212, among them 98 children, as the humanitarian crisis in the enclave deepens.
