HEBRON, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - AUGUST 9: Israeli forces arrested two Palestinian children and injured several others during raids across the occupied West Bank on Saturday evening, Aug. 9, according to Palestinian sources.
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that Israeli troops stormed the town of Qasra, south of Nablus, firing live ammunition and tear gas before detaining two brothers, Wissam and Siraj Mahmoud.
In the central West Bank, Israeli forces raided the Qalandia refugee camp and the town of Kafr Aqab near occupied East Jerusalem, firing tear gas that caused multiple cases of suffocation. The injured were treated at the scene, WAFA said.
Eyewitnesses told Anadolu that in Hebron, Israeli soldiers forced shop owners to shut down their businesses in the Old City as dozens of settlers entered the area. Similar raids occurred in the town of Dura, southwest of Hebron, where tear gas was deployed, leading to further injuries.
Under the Hebron Protocol signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1997, the city was split into H1 (Palestinian-administered) and H2 (Israeli-controlled) zones. The agreement granted Israel full security control over the Old City, including the Ibrahimi Mosque.
Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces and settlers have killed at least 1,013 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and injured around 7,000, according to Palestinian authorities.
More than 18,500 have been arrested.
The violence in the West Bank coincides with Israel’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian health officials report 61,369 killed and 152,862 wounded, mostly women and children.
Over 9,000 remain missing, while hundreds of thousands face displacement and severe food shortages.
