China: Traditional market in Beijing gets trendy makeover
[Voiceover] A century-old market located in Beijing is getting a fresh new look by blending traditional elements with modern trends to attract both locals and tourists. Chongwenmen Market, one of Beijing's oldest, has just reopened after a 15-year hiatus. While keeping its nostalgic charm, like vintage signage and classic counter service, it's added modern touches, including a night market. One barbecue stand in this market has become particularly popular. Known for its unchanged original flavors, the stall sells childhood memories on a stick, more than 150 skewers a day. [Soundbite] Ma Jinghuai, vendor at market: "I can sell at least 150 to 160 barbecue skewers a day, and even more on weekends. Among old markets, Chongwenmen Market already had a reputation. The name itself attracts people here." [Voiceover] New vendors are also thriving thanks to social media. This former food blogger now runs her own stall in the market and has built a nationwide customer base through platforms like Douyin and WeChat. [Soundbite] Liu Fugui, vendor at market: "I've shipped orders to Hangzhou, Chengdu, and even northeast China. The audience for new media is no longer limited to just young people; it spans everyone from kids to the elderly." [Voiceover] In the first half of 2025, Beijing's consumer market maintained an overall recovery trend, with total market consumption growing by 0.9 percent year on year.
