China: China's aluminum industry forges stronger competitive edge
[Voiceover] With economic uncertainties over tariffs shaking up the global steel and aluminum industries, China is laser focused on strengthening its own for the years ahead. According to a report from the International Aluminum Institute, the aluminum sector will need to produce 119 metric tons of the product by the year 2030 to meet demand from sectors like transportation, construction and packaging. The deputy general manager of a firm in southwest China’s Yunnan Province that makes electrolytic aluminum said one of the biggest users of their product is the electric vehicle industry, where one EV can use about 300 kilos of it. [Soundbite] Ning Degang, deputy general manager, Yunnan Aluminum Co., Ltd.: "This material, weighing about 10 kilograms, is called cast aluminum alloy. It’s the most important lightweight material for new energy vehicles. Each new energy vehicle currently uses nearly 300 kilograms of aluminum. Using aluminum can reduce vehicle weight by 120-180 kilograms, increasing the range of new energy vehicles by nearly 100 kilometers." [Voiceover] In another production workshop at the factory, 6mm aluminum alloy welding consumables are rolled, cooled, and coiled at a speed of three to four meters per second. The deputy manager said their production capabilities have made them a leading supplier to European welding companies. [Soundbite] Li Jian, deputy manager, Alloy Wire Production Center, Yunnan Aluminum Co., Ltd.: "After several years of hard work, our welding material production has reached international standards, and our domestic market share has reached 40%. Even leading European welding wire companies are importing from Yunnan, and our export value has increased year by year." [Voiceover] Earlier this year, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with other agencies, unveiled a plan to develop the country’s aluminum industry over the next two years, aiming to increase domestic bauxite resources, which is the naturally occurring ore that aluminum is made from, by 3-5 percent.
