The Rio Innovation Week 2025, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, took a closer look at international cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and technology ethics. As the largest and most influential innovation and technology show in Latin America, this event, now in its fifth edition, ran from August 12 to 15, bringing together large companies, startups, investors, and public-sector leaders in a dynamic showcase of ideas and opportunities. This year, the tech event coincided with the launch of the final version of the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan, a national strategy spearheaded by Brazil's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. It includes more than four billion U.S. dollars in funding through 2028 to advance AI development, while actively seeking international partnerships - including collaboration with China. "We seek to build partnerships based on reciprocal positions with other countries, and China is one that we are keen to have as a partner in the development of our artificial intelligence plan in Brazil," said Luis Fernandes, Brazil's deputy minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. Themed "a look through ethics," this year's event also explored pathways for responsible development of emerging technologies while simultaneously unlocking commercial opportunities. "Technological advancement is an unstoppable force -- it represents human progress and social evolution. While we wholeheartedly support technology and innovation here, we must collectively understand its boundaries and limitations. Only through such understanding can we ensure this progress remains healthy and sustainable," said Fabio Queiroz, co-founder of the tech show. The tech event showcased everything from artificial intelligence and robotics to diversity, health, sports, and the creative economy, blending business, science and culture under one roof. One of the main attractions in this event was the NAM Atlantico Multi-Purpose Aircraft Carrier, the Brazilian Navy's flagship aircraft carrier and Latin America's largest active military vessel. Measuring 203 meters in length and 30 meters high, it was transformed into an immersive space for science, culture and high tech. Brazil leads Latin America in technology and innovation, ranking higher than Chile and Mexico on the Global Innovation Index -- an advantage fully demonstrated at this year's Rio Innovation Week.
