Walking Around Welford and Sulby Reservoirs in a Dry Summer
This video shows the Welford and Sulby Reservoirs in Northamptonshire, filmed during a summer of exceptionally low rainfall. The water levels are far lower than usual, offering a rare view of the reservoirs in these conditions.
Sulby Reservoir was completed in 1814 to feed the newly built Welford Arm of the Grand Union Canal. When it proved insufficient on its own, Welford Reservoir, also known as “New Sulby” was added in 1837, together ensuring a steady supply of water to keep the canal navigable. The date 1934, seen on the steps at Welford, most likely marks later works or improvements carried out on the reservoir rather than its original construction.
The reservoirs also played a part in the area’s more recent history, providing water for the nearby Husbands Bosworth Airfield during the Second World War.
Today they remain a vital part of the canal system as well as a peaceful spot for walking and wildlife. This film serves as a simple record of the low water levels and the changing face of the reservoirs.
