An American ditched the US to move to Spain because it's "not a safe space for women" - and says she'll never return."

Kendra Bryan, 37, started thinking about leaving her home in Conway, Arkansas, after the Supreme Court voted to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in June 2022.

But it wasn't until President Trump was re-elected earlier this year Kendra decided to leave the US with her son, Tyson, 17, and partner, Dustin Poynter, 33.

Kendra headed online and Googled 'safe countries for women and LGBTQ+ people', and said Spain was at the top of the list.

She then headed out to Spain in May 2025 to tour the country and visit schools in the area.

The family sold all their belongings and left Arkansas for Barcelona, Spain, with six suitcases and doesn't plan on returning to the States.

Kendra, a content creator, said: "When Roe v. Wade was overturned a few years ago, that is when I started to see all these red flags waving at me."

"That is when I realized that America was not a safe space for women to live."

"The morning after the election, we were all so confused by the result, which pushed my decision to leave."

"My partner then realized we needed to leave after Trump was inaugurated and all these executive orders were rolling out of the gate."

After Donald Trump was re-elected as president in November 2024, Kendra said she decided America was no longer a safe place for women.

Kendra said: "We are immigrants, fleeing a dangerous country."

"I have a trans brother, and he felt unsafe too. The US overall is not very trans friendly; how they are treated is so inhumane and unacceptable."

"He has a five-year-old child, so we needed to find somewhere that was safe for him and his child."

In May 2025, Kendra and Dustin traveled to Spain for the first time to check out schools and where they would like to live.

During that visit, Kendra decided to settle.

She said: "Before this year, we had never been to Spain before."

"We went on a scouting trip earlier this year where we checked out local areas and visited the school where my son will be attending."

"We realize that we are in a fortunate position to be able to leave; not everyone can leave."

"Financially, we know so many people who just can't do it."

On August 14, 2025, Kendra, Dustin and Tyson left the US after selling all their belongings and putting their home on the market.

Kendra said: "We had three vehicles and sold all of them, we sold all our possessions and packed our life into six suitcases."

"The day we flew out, we put our house on the market and found out that we have an offer."

Kendra said the most difficult part of moving is taking her son away from his school in his senior year.

Despite having friends and family still in the States, Kendra said she has no plans to ever move back there.

Kendra said: "Tearing our son away from his friends and school in senior year was never part of the plan."

"To have to move him, not just out of school, but out of the country, has been difficult."

"He has been vocal about how it sucks, but he has never disagreed with our decision and understands why we had to go."

"Over the months, I am realizing more and more why we decided to leave, and everything that is going on has solidified our decision."

"It is not an environment that I feel safe in or one that I want to raise my child in."
