Heavy rain left basements flooded in Italy, causing disruption to residents in the region.

Footage shows a local wading through an inundated underground floor of a building in Marghera, Venice, on August 21.

Officials said some drivers were stranded, with their cars submerged up to the doors. Firefighters worked to pump water out of flooded cellars and garages.

The Veneto region experienced unusually heavy rain, with record amounts falling in Mestre, Mira, and parts of the provinces of Venice and Padua.

In Mira, up to 80 millimetres of rain fell within one hour.

Power outages were reported in Mestre after three underground electrical stations were flooded, leaving around 1,000 homes without electricity.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless travel is essential.
