1. VARIOUS OF DIVERS CLEANING AND REPAIRING 'CHRIST OF THE ABYSS" STATUE UNDER WATER CAMOGLI, ITALY - RELEASED ON AUGUST 22 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT "VIGILI DEL FUOCO" HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Divers descended 18 meters off the coast of Camogli, near Genoa, to perform maintenance on the famous “Christ of the Abyss” statue, officials said.

The operation, coordinated by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for Liguria, involved specialized diving teams from several state forces, including firefighters, police, Carabinieri, navy, coast guard and finance guard.

Using a high-pressure water jet, crews removed marine encrustations without touching the bronze sculpture directly — work aimed at preventing biodeterioration caused by marine organisms as well as preserving the statue’s appearance.
