STILL IMAGE OF MASSIVE EXPLOSION OCCURRED AT SMITTY'S SUPPLY PLANT ROSELAND, LOUISIANA, US - AUG. 22, 2025 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “TANGIPAHOA PARISH SHERIFF'S OFFICE” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY — An explosion Friday at the Smitty’s supply plant in the US state of Louisiana led to road closures and a 1-mile evacuation, including the Roseland Elementary School.

Authorities in Roseland said the main concerns are fire and debris, not chemicals, as emergency teams work to secure the site. Heavy black smoke continues to rise above the area, and residents in nearby towns reported hearing loud explosions.

“It’s such a horrible time for the city of Roseland. I’m asking everyone for your prayers,” one resident told WWL TV.

Because the elementary school is close to the explosion site, the Tangipahoa Parish Office of Homeland Security ordered the school to be evacuated. Students were bused to the Central Office in Amite, where parents and guardians can pick them up.

“The safety of students and staff is at the top of our priority list,” said officials. “Please be patient and work with us during this event.”

The evacuation area was first small but later extended to a 1-mile radius as a precaution against fire and falling debris, according to officials. Highway 51 at Highway 10 is still closed, with drivers advised to use alternate routes. The Tangipahoa Parish Emergency Operations Center remains active and continues assessments.
