Participants laid flowers and paid tribute to the soldiers of Ukraine who died in the war with Russia.

This year marks the fourth Independence Day Ukrainians have observed since the start of the Russian war.

An official ceremony was held at Sophia Square in the capital Kyiv with the attendance of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ukraine's Independence Day is celebrated annually on Aug. 24 and marks the day when the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the country's Declaration of Independence.
