WASHINGTON — Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as The Old Guard, placed American flags at gravesites Thursday at the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day.

The tradition, part of the annual “Flags In” ceremony, honors the sacrifices of service members laid to rest at the historic cemetery, which dates back to the Civil War era.

The event is a solemn reminder of the nation’s debt to its fallen heroes and is one of several similar tributes held across the country this week.
