A dramatic timelapse video captured by Melissa Levick shows a massive haboob engulfing a Phoenix neighborhood on August 25, 2025.

Fueled by monsoon thunderstorms, the dust storm produced winds up to 70 mph, reducing visibility to near zero. The storm caused widespread power outages, affecting more than 135,000 customers across the city.

Operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport were disrupted as debris from a terminal roof scattered across the tarmac, forcing flight suspensions.

The storm is part of a larger pattern of extreme weather hitting the Southwest, reminiscent of recent dust events that disrupted the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

In Levick’s video, clear skies vanish almost instantly under a towering wall of dust, illustrating the storm’s sudden and overwhelming force.

She shared her reaction, saying, “Now you see it [desert], now you don’t. Survived our first Arizona Haboob!”
