A stray dog spent seven days trapped on the roof of a building before tragically falling to its death during heavy rainfall.

The pooch, named Hero by volunteers, had wandered out onto the 17th floor balcony of the Villa Kejora apartments in Penang, Malaysia on August 20 but could not climb back inside.

Concerned residents alerted rescuers on August 23, prompting a series of rescue operations that sadly ended without success.

The first attempt lasted three hours, with Good Samaritans trying to entice the animal using food, but the frightened mutt refused to move.

Over the following days, more volunteers joined the effort, including firefighters, soldiers, and members of the non-government organisation 4Paws on August 25.

They cut through a metal door and placed a makeshift bridge with food to encourage Hero to cross, but it remained frozen in fear at a steep corner of the rooftop.

However, a storm struck the area on August 27 and the heavy rain made the tiles slippery, causing Hero to lose its footing and plunge 17 floors to the ground, where it died instantly.

Heartbroken residents and volunteers discovered the mutt's body the next day, August 28, and held a funeral for the hapless pooch.

Footage shows Hero tucked into a small white coffin surrounded by flowers and draped with a rainbow-patterned cloth as residents paid their last respects.

4Paws said: ‘For days he endured hunger, loneliness, and the sight of so many people below hoping to save him.

‘His story touched countless hearts. And now, though he is gone, we pray his soul has found peace away from the fear and struggle he faced here.'

Residents attended the funeral and was cremated on August 29.
