GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - SEPT. 2: A severe water shortage is devastating the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip, following the destruction of main water lines, local sources report.
Hundreds of residents are forced to queue for hours daily from the early morning to collect limited amounts of drinking water from tankers and alternative wells. The crisis is intensifying due to rising temperatures and a critical lack of supplies, severely impacting tens of thousands of displaced persons and refugees in the camp.
The situation places a particular burden on women and children, who endure long waits to secure the minimum water required for daily needs. The absence of urgent intervention from international and humanitarian organizations is exacerbating the conditions, with residents facing heightened risks of dehydration and the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
"Water has become more expensive than food," one resident stated, highlighting how the persistent shortages pose a direct threat to survival.
There is a growing demand for urgent action to implement sustainable solutions and restore access to water, a fundamental human right. This need is underscored by widespread frustration over perceived international inaction.
According to reports, over 80% of Gaza’s water infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed since October 2023, when Israel began its military campaign. Prior to the conflict, the enclave relied heavily on water piped from Israel’s Mekorot company, with the remainder sourced from local aquifers.
The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of more than 63,600 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities, and has left the coastal territory facing a severe humanitarian crisis, including famine.
In a related development, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Separately, Israel faces a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where it is accused of violating the Genocide Convention during its military operation in the enclave.
