Two 12-year-old girls who became lost while trekking were rescued in Indonesia.

The youngsters, Melisa and Yudit, had joined three other friends on a hike up a hill on the island of Tarakan in North Kalimantan on September 1.

However, they became separated from the group and failed to find their way back down.

When the pair did not return home for dinner, worried families and neighbours reported them missing.

Local authorities, volunteers, and villagers quickly joined a search late into the night, and they were found following a trail near a river.

Syahril, head of Tarakan Search and Rescue Office, said: ‘After receiving reports of the missing children, we immediately dispatched a team to conduct a search.'

The youngsters were discovered in a remote area 30 minutes away from the rescue facility. They were taken to an ambulance and given a health check by medics before being assisted home.

Syahril added: ‘Melisa and Yudit were found safe, but they were exhausted.'

The youngsters were unhurt and are now reunited with their families.
