Couple arrested over racist attack on Filipino nursing assistant in the UK
An elderly couple were arrested over an alleged racist attack on a Filipino nursing assistant and her family while they were walking in a park in the United Kingdom.
The pair hurled abuse at Apple Moorhouse when she complained about their dog scaring her daughter while she was with friends and family at Manor Heath Park in Halifax, West Yorkshire, on August 29.
Horrifying footage shows how the elderly man reacted, ordering the pooch to ‘kill' Apple before making a Nazi salute and shouting ‘ban all immigrants'.
During the clash, he said: ‘Have you got off a rubber boat? Did you come across the channel?'
Mother-of-two Apple explained that she holds a British passport, but the bald man then began singing ‘row your boat' before hurling a bowl of his dog's water at the family.
Shockingly, the suspect's wife stormed over and branded shaken Apple a ‘slave'.
The alleged attacker said: ‘Health care worker? Don't make me laugh. Do you know what you are? You're a slave, you do all of the jobs we don't want to do.'
She grabbed Apple's arm as she tried to yank her phone away while saying: 'I'll make you so b****y sick you'll wonder what's going on.'
The assault was branded ‘vile' by shocked onlooker Charlene Francesca, who called for the pair to be ‘brought to justice'.
She said: 'My beautiful friend, daughter and her father were racially abused and assaulted at Manor Heath Park. I literally have no words. I hope to god they get the punishment they deserve! Absolute scum.'
The incident unfolded in front of Apple's shocked elderly parents, who were visiting her in the north of England. Apple later reported the alleged attack to the local police.
The West Yorkshire Police said the suspects, whose identities were not disclosed, were arrested on August 30 but were released on bail pending further investigation.
A spokesman said: 'Police have today made two arrests in relation to an incident in Manor Heath Park in Halifax on Thursday, which was widely shared on social media.
'A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault.
'Both remain in custody at this time, and enquiries are continuing. We would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter.'
Distraught Apple, who is married to a British man and has been living in the UK for 15 years as a health care worker, said she now wants to move on from the incident, which she said has affected her mental health.
She said: 'I feel uncomfortable every time I step out of my door, looking over my shoulder and judging every person that looks at me suspiciously and scaring my life out. I can't eat properly or sleep in peace. I get upset every time I think about what happened, but I am trying to fight this for my daughters.
'I am not leaving the country because this is where my family is, my eldest just started high school in a grammar school, which she worked hard to get into, and I am not going to take that away from her.
'The only mistake I made was to protect my daughters, nothing else. If saying what I think was right is a mistake, then I apologise, take me accountable for what happened.'
Anti-immigrant sentiment is rising in the UK, fuelled by asylum seekers arriving through small boat crossings as well as concerns over pressure on housing, jobs, and public services.
Some politicians have framed the issue as a national crisis, though public opinion remains divided.
