Sailors from across the country pitted themselves against the Round Isle of Sheppey Race in Kent, UK today (September 7).

The annual race held since 1959 is open to sailing dinghies, catamarans & sailboards and believed to be the longest race of its type in the UK & Europe and is organised by IOS Sailing Club.

At Kingsferry Bridge, rules stipulate that competitors must capsize and walk them underneath the bridge, although they are allowed to receive assistance to do this.

Forty competitors in a wide range of craft took part this year.

Footage shows the start at Sheerness, craft off Minster on Sea, Warden Bay cliffs, Leysdown & Shellness, followed by participants negotiating the Kingsferry Bridge, Queenborough, the Port of Sheerness and the finish back in Sheerness.
