VARIOUS WIDE SHOTS OF MEWASI AREA, MAKESHIFT TENTS, PEOPLE IN STREETKHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - SEPT. 7, 2025: Palestinians displaced by more than 23 months of Israeli attacks on the blockaded Gaza Strip are struggling to survive in densely packed tents in the Mewasi area, west of Khan Younis. Displaced families face severe hygiene challenges due to limited access to clean water and inadequate infrastructure, a situation that has particularly contributed to the spread of disease among children. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians seeking shelter in Mewasi, designated by Israel as a so-called “humanitarian zone” to protect them from bombardments, continue to be affected by attacks. Atif Abu Lebde, a displaced Palestinian trying to endure harsh conditions in the Mewasi tents, summarized life in the area as living in hell. He warned that Palestinians forced by Israel to move from northern to southern Gaza are effectively moving from one hell to another, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Nada Abu Asi, another displaced resident, said Mewasi is not safe. She expressed fear of a large-scale displacement triggered by intensified Israeli attacks on northern Gaza and the implementation of Israel’s occupation plans in the region. The Israeli genocidal war in Gaza has killed nearly 64,400 Palestinians since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
