Mount Marapi volcano erupts sending ash cloud over homes in Indonesia
Mount Marapi volcano erupted in Indonesia on Sunday evening, sending a 3,940ft ash column towering above nearby homes.
Dramatic footage shows the plume rising from the volcano in West Sumatra on September 7.
Officers at the Marapi Volcano Observation Post recorded a thick, grey ash column drifting northeast.
The eruption was detected by seismographs, with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimetres and lasting approximately 54 seconds.
Teguh Purnomo, an officer at the Mount Marapi Observation Post, said: 'Currently, Marapi is at Alert Level II. People should not conduct activities within a three-kilometre radius of the crater.'
A total lunar eclipse occurred at the same time as the eruption and was visible across most of the country.
Mount Marapi is an active stratovolcano located in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Standing at around 9,485ft, it is one of the most active volcanoes on the island and frequently erupts with ash and lava. Its activity poses ongoing risks to nearby communities, including ashfall and cold lava flows.
Marapi is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
