No words can be found to adequately describe the horrors facing children living through catastrophic conditions in the Gaza Strip, according to a spokeswoman for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), who warned the enclave has also become one of the most dangerous places in the world for aid workers. In an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), spokeswoman Tess Ingram stated that the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate as the region comes under endless attacks, while a shortage of water, food and medical support puts more lives at risk. According to report issued by UNICEF, the war in the Gaza Strip has taken an unconscionable toll on children. At least 50,000 have been reported killed or injured, with more on the brink of starvation. Ingram said it is impossible to describe just how desperate the situation currently is for young people in Gaza, saying "dire" is not a strong enough word. The difficulty for aid workers in the enclave has also been clear, with the UN humanitarian office stating in a report that of the record 383 aid workers killed in global hotspots in 2024, nearly half of them lost their lives in Gaza. Amid these huge challenges, Ingram also expressed gratitude for China's support of the UN's response in the region. Shotlist: Gaza Strip - Recent: FILE: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - July 2025 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Tess Ingram, UNICEF spokeswoman (starting with shot 4): "The humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip has always been critical but it is more important now than ever before because people are under attack every day, every aspect of their lives. People need food to survive. We've got a famine confirmed in Gaza City and it is at risk of spreading to the middle area [of the Gaza Strip]. People don't have enough safe water to drink. Hospitals are under attack and the health system is collapsing and so we as UNICEF and our humanitarian partners must do everything that we can to try and fill those gaps and provide people with the essentials that they need to survive, particularly children, which is who UNICEF is here to serve."; FILE: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Feb 28, 2025 6. Various of students, damaged school buildings; Gaza Strip - Recent 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Tess Ingram, UNICEF spokeswoman: "Every aspect of a child's life has been impacted by this conflict. They're not going to school, they don't have enough to eat, they don't have enough water to drink, they're being traumatized by what they've experienced around them. I've met children who have had their limbs amputated, who have lost their mothers, who have been buried underneath rubble, who have gone days at a time without eating. So the situation of children in the Gaza Strip is dire and that's not even a strong enough word. We need new language to describe the horrors that children in Gaza are experiencing every day."; Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Aug 23, 2025 8. Various of women taking care of children in hospital; Gaza Strip - Recent 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Tess Ingram, UNICEF spokeswoman: "This is one of the most difficult and dangerous places in the world to be an aid worker. More than 500 aid workers have been killed on our missions. We often encounter danger even when that mission has been approved and is something that we have been told will be a safe journey. Sometimes we are held up, we face delays, we face danger from strikes or from other parts of the conflict and this shouldn't happen. If we're able to coordinate our movements and get approval for missions, we should know that we are going to be safe and the people that we serve are going to be safe."; Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Sept 5, 2025 10. Various of high-rise building being hit, people fleeing; Gaza Strip - Recent 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Tess Ingram, UNICEF spokeswoman: "We are grateful to the Chinese government and to the people of China for continuing to support the United Nations response here in Gaza. It is so important. Without the support of the international community, we cannot do this work to protect children, to provide them with nutrition supplies when they have malnutrition, to provide them with safe water, to try and reconnect them with their families if they're separated. UNICEF is here on the ground every day undertaking missions that support and protect children with the help of the international community."; FILE: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Feb 25, 2025 12.
